| Anthropologist and archaeologist, born in Beijing, China. He went to the USA in 1955, earned a PhD at Harvard, and taught at Yale (1961–77) and Harvard (1977). A specialist in Far East Asian prehistory, he wrote important works including The Archaeology of Ancient China (1963, frequently revised), The Chinese Bronze Age (2 vols, 1983–90), and Shang Civilization (1980). |
