| biography:
| Painter, born in Khvalynsk, W Russia. Initially trained as an icon painter, he later studied painting in St Petersburg and Moscow, then travelled in Africa. After the 1917 Revolution, the titles of his paintings reflect new concerns, such as ‘The Year 1918 in Petrograd’ (1920) and ‘Workers’ (1926). His importance rests mainly on his influence as a teacher of the first generation of Soviet painters at the Leningrad Art Academy. |
