| Austrian statesman and chancellor (1934–8), born in Riva, N Italy (formerly Austria–Hungary). He served in World War 1, practised law, was elected a Christian Socialist Deputy (1927), and became minister of justice (1932) and of education (1933). His attempt to prevent Hitler occupying Austria led to his imprisonment until 1945.
