| biography:
| Artist, born in Hanover, NC Germany. He studied at the Dresden Academy, and painted abstract pictures before joining the Dadaists. His best-known contribution to the movement was ‘Merz’, a name he gave to a form of collage using such everyday detritus, such as broken glass, tram tickets, and scraps of paper picked up in the street. From 1920 onwards he slowly built from bits and pieces of rubbish a three-dimensional construction which he called his ‘Merzbau’, and which filled the house before being destroyed in an air raid in 1943. In 1937 he fled from Nazi Germany to Norway, then in 1940 to England. |
