| Mathematician, born in Kiel, Germany. Emigrating to the USA to teach at New York University (NYU) (1937), he later directed NYU's Courant Institute (1966–7). A National Academy of Sciences member, recipient of the National Medal of Science (1977), and author of several books, he conducted groundbreaking work in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical physics. |
