| Writer, born in Leipzig, E Germany. Originally a sculptor and a professor of brass casting in Berlin, he began to write only in 1929. His writing was influenced by Jean Paul and Wilhelm Raabe, and includes plays, poetry, discourses on aesthetics, and novels in the realistic tradition, such as his major work Der Herr Kortüm (1938). |
