| German statesman, born in Kulm, SEC Germany. He studied law and political science at the universities of Leipzig and Berlin, and from 1930 to 1933 was a member of the Reichstag and of the executive of the Social Democratic parliamentary group. An outspoken opponent of National Socialism, he spent 10 years in Nazi concentration camps (1933–43), where he showed outstanding courage. In 1946 he became chairman of the Social Democratic Party and of the parliamentary group of the Bundestag. |
