| German politician, born in Berlin, Germany. At first a member of the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (SPD), he later joined the Unabhängige Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands (USPD), and was a leader in the Munich November revolution of 1918. He was Bavarian Ministerpräsident until his assassination by Graf Arco auf Valley, which precipitated the declaration of the Münchener Räterepublik. |
