| Organic chemist, born in Chorzow, S Poland (formerly Königshütte, Germany). With Otto Diels he discovered in 1928 the Diels–Alder diene reaction, valuable in organic synthesis, and they shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1950. |
