| Mongol emperor of China (1279–94), the grandson of Genghis Khan. He was acclaimed Great Khan in 1260, with suzerainty from the Pacific to the Black Sea. An energetic prince, he suppressed his rivals, adopted the Chinese mode of civilization, encouraged mathematicians and men of letters, and made Buddhism the state religion. He established himself at Cambaluc (modern Beijing), the first foreigner ever to rule in China, and ruled an empire which extended as far as the R Danube. Recognizing China's importance, he made it a separate realm within the Mongol Empire. The splendour of his court was legendary. |
