| biography:
| Athlete, born in Trondheim, C Norway. A former cross-country skiing champion, and then an outstanding long-distance runner, she is the only person to hold world best times for the 5000 m, 10 000 m, and marathon, which she achieved in 1985–6. In 1986 she knocked 45·68 s off the world 10 000 m record, and easily won the European title. She has won most of the world's major marathons, including Boston, Chicago, and London, and was the world cross-country champion in 1988. |
