| Soviet military commander, born in Velikiye Lukie, W Russia. He served in World War 1, and joined the Red Guards in 1917. In World War 2 he defended Moscow, played a leading part in the Battle of Stalingrad (1943), recaptured Orel and Warsaw, and led the Russian race for Berlin. Promoted to marshal of the Soviet Union (1944), he was appointed Polish minister of defence (1949), but was forced to resign when Gomulka became premier in 1956. A national hero, he thereafter held various posts, including that of defence minister. |
