| biography:
| German king (1024–39), King of the Langobards (Italy) (1026), and Holy Roman Emperor (1027–39), the son of the Duke of Franconia. He founded the Salian dynasty and was successor of the Liudolfing Henry II. In 1026 he crossed the Alps, crushed a rebellion in Italy, was crowned at Milan. He was soon recalled to Germany to put down four revolts, which he achieved by 1033, and in the same year was crowned King of Burgundy, which he acquired through the dynastic connections of his wife Gisela. Apart from his successful border politics towards Hungary and Poland, he also tried to strengthen the ties of Italy to the Reich. |
