| biography:
| German king (911–18), a member of the Franconian dynasty the Konradiner, in succession to Louis the Child (Ludwig IV, das Kind), the last of the East Frankish Carolingians. He failed in his attempts to uphold the traditions of Carolingian kingship against the powerful Saxon, Bavarian, and Swabian dukes, and is said to have proposed his opponent, the Liudolfing Henry of Saxony, as his successor. |
