| biography:
| Tennis player, born in Long Beach, California, USA. She won the women's doubles title at Wimbledon in 1961 (with Karen Hantze Susman) at her first attempt, and between 1961 and 1979 won a record 20 Wimbledon titles, including the singles in 1966–8, 1972–3, and 1975. She also won 13 US titles (including four singles), four French titles (one singles), and two Australian titles (one singles). She was the first president of the Women's Tennis Association in 1974. In 1987 she was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame. |
