| Politician, born in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. He was educated at the University of Western Australia and Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, returning to take up an academic post at Murdoch University. In 1980 he was elected as an MP for the West Australian seat of Swan, but transferred to the seat of Brand in 1996. He held a number of portfolios, including defence, employment, education, and training, during the Australian Labor Party's 13 years in power, and became deputy prime minister (1995–6). Since 1996 he had been leader of the Australian Labor Party Opposition, but he resigned after the election defeat in 2001. |
