| biography:
| Writer, born in Otautahi, Christchurch, New Zealand. From a novelist with a moderate measure of local recognition, she acquired international renown in 1985 when her story The Bone People (1984) was awarded the Booker Prize. Maori themes figure prominently in her work, which also reflects a desire to live in close affinity to the natural environment. Later books include The Windeater (1987) and Bait (1992). |
