| biography:
| British politician, born in London. He worked as a laboratory technician before training as a teacher. Elected a member of Lambeth Council in 1971 and then of Camden (1978–82) he was also a member of the regional executive of the Greater London Labour Party (1974–86) and of the Greater London Council ( GLC) (1973–86). He was elected leader of the GLC in 1981 and fought a long battle to prevent its abolition by Magaret Thatcher. Following the GLC's demise, he became Labour MP for Brent East in 1987. Aways to the left of the party, he was a member of its national executive committee in 1987–9 and was re-elected again in 1997. He was an unsuccessful Labour candidate for the newly established position of Mayor of London in 2000, but nonetheless stood as an independent and was elected. |
