| Historian, born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, USA. He studied at Boston University (1936 BA) and Columbia University (1938 MA; 1941 PhD), and then taught at the University of Manitoba (Canada) (1943–50) and Columbia (1950–65). Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton (1968) and one of America's most distinguished mediaevalists, his works include A History of the Crusades (5 vols, editor-in-chief, 1969–85), The Papacy and the Levant, 1204–1571 (4 vols, 1976–84), and Western Hostility to Islam (1992). |
