| Film-maker, born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, C England, UK. After studying law at Oxford he became an actor, then trained as a television director, and joined the BBC. He directed various early episodes of Z Cars (1962) before making his name in the Wednesday Play series, highlighting social problems such as homelessness in Cathy Come Home (1966). His first feature film, Poor Cow (1967), was followed by the popular Kes (1969). His television documentary series, Questions of Leadership (1983), was banned on political grounds. Later works include Fatherland (1987), Riff-Raff (1991), Carla's Song (1996), and My Name is Joe (1998) . |
