| Writer, born in Kennebunk, Maine, USA. He studied at Cornell (1908 BA), where he was the editor of the humour magazine. He became a reporter and columnist for the Boston Sunday Post (1909–17), and also wrote verse, plays, and editorials. A reporter for the Saturday Evening Post during the 1920s, he then began working on the first of many historical novels. His best-known books include Arundel (1930), Northwest Passage (1937), and Lydia Bailey (1947), and several of his works incorporated his often conservative, anti-establishment views. He lived in Kennebunkport, ME, and in later years wrote several books about locating water with a divining rod. |
