| biography:
| Architectural historian, born in Neenah, Wisconsin, USA. He studied at Harvard and went on to teach generations of architectural historians there (1920–55). He devoted decades to research on the monastic church at Cluny, France, and among his works is Carolingian and Romanesque Architecture 800–1200 (1959). His object-oriented, technical historiography fell out of fashion after the 1940s. |
