| biography:
| Painter and teacher, born in Oneida, New York, USA. He travelled in Europe (1900), returned to New York City, continued to paint and, most importantly, began his intermittent teaching career at the Art Students League (1911–51). His paintings are classically composed with richly glazed colours, as in ‘The Fitting Room’ (1931). As a teacher he influenced many artists, including Isabelle Bishop, Edward Hopper, and Reginald Marsh. |
