| Cricketer, born in Reading, S England, UK. First capped in 1955, he did not return to Test cricket until 1959, when he became a permanency, playing in 82 Tests, and making a total of 6806 runs for an average of 58·67. He scored 20 Test centuries, including 256 against Australia at Old Trafford in 1964. He retired early from top-class cricket because of ill health, and died in Barbados during the England tour of the West Indies while acting as assistant manager. |
