| biography:
| Prime minister of St Kitts and Nevis (1983–95). He studied medicine at the University of the West Indies, worked in hospitals in Jamaica, the Bahamas, and the USA, and returned in 1964 to establish his own practice. He entered politics, and in 1965 founded the People's Action Movement (PAM) as an alternative to the Labour Party. After a series of unsuccessful elections, in 1980 the PAM won enough seats in the Assembly to form a coalition government with the Nevis Reformation Party. Full independence from Anguilla was achieved in 1983, he became prime minister, and his coalition party was re-elected in 1984, 1989, and 1993. |
