| Writer, born in La Junta, Colorado, USA. He worked as a ward attendant in a mental hospital, an experience he used to telling effect in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1962). Filmed in 1975 by Milos Forman, it won five Oscars. After the failure of Sometimes a Great Notion (1966), he relinquished ‘literature’ for ‘life’. He served a prison sentence for marijuana possession, and formed the ‘Merry Pranksters’, whose weird exploits are described at length in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test (1967). The stories, essays, and poems in Demon Box (1986) are also partly autobiographical. A later novel, Sailor Song, appeared in 1993, and Last Go Round in 1994. |
