| biography:
| Modern dancer and actor, born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. A dance instructor with a degree in economics from the University of Pittsburgh, he travelled to New York City, and found employment in the chorus of Leave it to Me (1938). His stage success in Pal Joey (1939) led to a Hollywood debut in For Me and My Girl (1942), followed by a long series of musicals in which he was often co-director and choreographer, such as An American in Paris (1951) and Singin' in the Rain (1952). In 1951 he received a special Academy Award, and from the 1960s worked mostly as a director, notably of Hello, Dolly! (1969). He received an American Film Institute Life Achievement Award in 1985. |
