| Novelist and playwright, born in Hunslet, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He worked at various jobs before becoming a journalist. His second novel Billy Liar (1959) became a best-seller, and was adapted for stage (1960) and screen (1963). He is especially known for his partnership with Willis Hall (1929– ), with whom he wrote several plays, screenplays, and revues, including Celebration (1961) and All Things Bright and Beautiful (1963). Later novels include Billy Liar on the Moon (1975), Maggie Muggins (1981), Bimbo (1990), Unsweet Charity (1992), and Good Grief (1997). He also wrote several television series, such as Budgie, Worzel Gummidge, and Andy Capp, and a number of general books, such as Waterhouse at Large (1985) and English, Our English (1991). In 1995 appeared a volume of memoirs, Streets Ahead. |
