| Literary critic and essayist, born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He works for the De Volkskrant newspaper and is regarded as one of the most influential literary critics in The Netherlands. In 1962, together with H U Jessurun d'Oliveira and J J Overstegen, he founded the influential literary magazine Merlyn. His essays, published weekly in De Volkskrant, often express his fascination with the immense influence of Christianity on European literature. In 1990 he was awarded the P C Hooft-prijs for his work as an essayist. |
