| biography:
| Painter and designer, born in Kiev, Ukraine. He studied in Moscow in 1902 and, together with Mondrian, was one of the earliest pioneers of pure abstraction, founding the Suprematist movement. He claimed to have painted the first totally abstract picture, a black square on a white background, as early as 1913. Certainly he was exhibiting similar work by 1915, and went on to paint a series entitled ‘White on White’. |
