| Contralto singer, born in Higher Walton, Lancashire, NW England, UK. A singing prize at a local music festival led her to undertake serious studies in 1940, and she rapidly won a great reputation. One of her greatest successes was in Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth) at the first Edinburgh Festival (1947). |
