| New Zealand teacher and suffragist, born in England, UK. She studied in Auckland, and in 1877 became the first woman university graduate in New Zealand, and the first woman in the British Empire to earn a BA. In 1877 she joined the staff of Christchurch Girls High School, and became the founding principal of Nelson College for Girls (1882–93). For the next 30 years she was prominent in women's organizations. |
