| News reporter and correspondent, born in Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, NE England, UK. She studied at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, then joined local BBC radio (1969–76), moving to BBC TV South (1977–8). As a reporter for BBC TV News (1979–81), correspondent (1982), and chief correspondent (1989–2003), she has become a familiar figure presenting reports from the heart of war-torn countries around the world. Among her awards are the Royal Television Society's News Award (1981, 1987), and the BAFTA Richard Dimbleby Award (1989). |
