| biography:
| Writer and preacher, born in Ossig, E Germany. He served at various German courts, and c.1525 developed a form of Protestantism. His doctrines resembled those of the Quakers, and brought him banishment and persecution, but he gained disciples everywhere. Most of his works were burned by both Protestants and Catholics. Some of his persecuted followers (most numerous in Silesia and Swabia) emigrated to Holland. In 1734, 40 families emigrated to England, and from there to Pennsylvania, where they formed the Schwenkfelder Church. |
