| Hungarian politician and prime minister (1987–8), born in Miskolc, N Hungary. He began his career as a printer, then worked as a newspaper editor. He joined the ruling Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party (HSWP) in 1945, and served as Party chief in Budapest (1984–7). He joined the HSWP Politburo in 1985, became prime minister in 1987, and succeeded Kadar as HSWP leader (1988–9). He moved with the times, and became a committed reformer in both the economic and political spheres, seeking to establish in Hungary a new system of ‘socialist pluralism’. |
