| Chemist, born in Helsa, C Germany. He studied at Marburg University, taught at Heidelberg and Halle, and in 1943 was appointed director of the Max Planck Carbon Research Institute at Mülheim. With Italian chemist Giulio Natta he was awarded the 1963 Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his research into long-chain polymers leading to new developments in industrial materials, such as polypropylene. |
