| German statesman and philologist, born in Potsdam, EC Germany. After travelling in Europe, he became a diplomat, and for some years devoted himself to literature. He became Prussian minister at Rome (1801), first minister of public instruction (1808), and minister in Vienna (1810). He was the first to study Basque scientifically, and he also worked on the languages of the East and of the South Sea Is. |
