| Engineering seismologist, born in Tucson, Arizona, USA. He was a structural designer (1942–50) before joining the University of California, Berkeley (1950–78). He advised national and state organizations on the environmental impact of earthquakes, and made major contributions to the US Public Health Earthquake Hazards Reduction Act (1977). |
