| Holy Roman Emperor (1711), born in Vienna, Austria, the second son of Habsburg Emperor Leopold I. He became emperor on the death of his brother, Emperor Joseph I, and, as Charles [Karl] III, became Archduke of Austria and King of Hungary (1712). Following the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–13), Charles' claim to the Spanish throne was rejected in favour of Philip V of Bourbon. Charles issued the Pragmatic Sanction (1713) enabling his daughter, Maria Theresa, to succeed him after the extinction of a direct male Habsburg line, which was accepted only after the War of the Polish Succession (1733–8). During his reign he gained (1716–18) and lost (1737–9) territories in Serbia and Hungary from the Ottoman Turks. |
