| biography:
| Painter and print-maker, born in Rottluff, E Germany. He began as an architectural student in Dresden, and became one of the founder members of the avant-garde group of painters known as Die Brücke (1905). He developed a harsh, angular style which is well exemplified in his powerful woodcuts such as ‘Woman with Hat’ (1905). |
