| Roman Catholic theologian, born in Freiburg, SW Germany. He studied at Freiburg and Innsbruck, and taught at Innsbruck, Munich, and Münster. In his voluminous writings (such as his multivolume Theological Investigations), he uses insights of the philosophy of existentialism while remaining true to the tradition of Aquinas. He played a major role as a consultant at the Second Vatican Council (1962–5). |
