| biography:
| Writer, born in Ernsthal, W Germany. Having spent a total of seven years in prison for minor offences, he worked as an editor before becoming a full-time writer producing a large number of very popular, widely-read books. Many were made into films, including his early novel Das Waldröschen (1882) written under a pseudonym, and his famous adventure and Wild West stories, including Winnetou (4 vols, 1893–1910). His later work, such as Und Frieden auf Erden (1904), had more literary merit. |
