| King of Bohemia (1346) and Holy Roman Emperor (1355), born in Prague, Czech Republic. Originally named Wenzel, he was the son of Johannes, King of Bohemia from the House of Luxembourg. Elected Holy Roman Emperor (1346) initially as anti-king to Ludwig IV, he was crowned in Rome (1355) and published the Golden Bull (1356). His reign was characterized by a drive for peace and the construction of buildings in Prague, where he founded the first German university in 1348. |
