| biography:
| German Emperor, born in Munich, SE Germany. Duke of Upper Bavaria (1294) and United Bavaria (1340–7), he was elected German king (1314) in favour of the Habsburg king, Frederick the Fair (Friedrich der Schöne), whom he conquered at Mühldorf (1322) in a lengthy campaign over the succession. He deposed Pope John XXII in 1324 following a protracted dispute over imperial rights in Italy, appointed an antipope, and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor in 1328. Karl IV of the House of Luxembourg was appointed as anti-king in 1346, but Ludwig died before he could challenge the decision. |
