| biography:
| Egyptologist, born in Naumburg, Germany. He studied Egyptology in Rome, headed an antiquarian expedition to Egypt (1842–5), and in 1846 was appointed professor in Berlin. His Chronologie der Aegypter (1849, Egyptian Chronology) laid the foundation for a scientific treatment of early Egyptian history, and Denkmäler aus Aegypten und Aethiopien (1859, Egyptian and Ethiopian Monuments) remains a masterpiece. He was a member of the Royal Academy, director of the Egyptian section of the Royal Museum, and chief librarian of the Royal Library at Berlin. |
