| German naval commander, born in Grünau, NE Germany. He entered the submarine service of the German Navy in 1916, and became a staunch advocate of U-boat warfare. He planned Hitler's U-boat fleet, was made its commander in 1936, and in 1943 became commander-in-chief of the German navy. Becoming führer on the death of Hitler, he was responsible for the final surrender to the Allies, and in 1946 was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for war crimes. |
