| Composer and violinist, born in Vienna, Austria. A friend of Haydn, he also played in Viennese string quartets with Mozart. The composer of 13 Italian operas, and much orchestral and piano music, he is chiefly remembered for his contribution to the development of the German comic operatic tradition (Singspiel). |
