| Philologist, born in Wiesbaden, WC Germany. Professor of Sanskrit at Freiburg (1884) and Leipzig (1887), he wrote a Comparative Grammar of the Indo-Germanic Languages (1886–93, trans title). He was a leading exponent of the Neogrammarian school, stressing the fixity of sound laws. |
