| Conductor, born in Graz, SE Austria. He studied in Vienna and held permanent posts as an opera conductor in Dresden (1934–43), Vienna (1943–5, 1954–6), and elsewhere, and also appeared frequently in London, New York City, and Bayreuth. Remembered chiefly for his Mozart performances, he also conducted premieres of operas by Richard Strauss, a personal friend. |
