| German general, born in Darmstadt, WC Germany. In 1942–4 he was commander-in-chief of the German army in France. As a member of the resistance movement against Hitler he organized the attempted overthrow of the military dictatorship in Paris. He was sentenced to death and executed in Berlin-Plötzensee. |
